You are What you Eat

Every year your body completely regenerates itself.  Every time you eat, you are taking in raw materials to rebuild yourself.  As you plan and prepare your meals just think about the kinds of foods you want to rebuild yourself with.   Your risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, autoimmune diseases and even cancer are directly related to your dietary choices.  I recommend a whole food diet that is rich in fruits & vegetables, nuts & seeds, and high quality protein sources such as fish (low pesticide & mercury residue), poultry (preferably organic), free range eggs and grass fed-finished meats.  Simple sugars, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners-colors-flavors, preservatives, hydrogenated fats and processed foods are toxic to the body and cause accelerated aging and disease.

Improving your diet is not has hard as it seems.  I promise that once you make that leap, it will be no harder for you to eat more healthfully.  Here are some healthy food exchange ideas and 2 very simple recipes.

Simple Healthy Cookies

2 large bananas (overripe is best!)

1 cup oats

Mash and stir ingredients together.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15 min.  That’s all there is to it!!

I always add cinnamon to mine!  Other add ins: nuts (walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, etc), raisins, carob bits, seeds, unsweetened cocoa powder.

Another fun tidbit:  for any recipe where you see “mashed banana”, you can always substitute pure pumpkin puree or applesauce BUT make sure they are unsweetened!!  It’s fun to try those substitutions for a different flavor sometimes.

Banana Ice Cream

Overripe bananas

Just freeze bananas and blend them!  You can add in nuts, peanut butter, coconut, kiwi, carob bits, unsweetened cocoa powder, powered PB, etc.  Get creative!  But always remember to keep those add ins healthy: use whole food, non-processed, ingredients without any added sugar or sweeteners.  The more overripe the banana, the more flavorful!
